BSW - CAA - Drawing class with Simon

 Drawing Class with Simon

On Tuesday we had a drawing lesson where we would kind of test our skills in multiple 'challenge' tasks. I chose to work on photoshop doing the drawings digitally as I knew I needed to sharpen my skills on the tablet. Some chose to work on these drawings traditionally maybe as they felt they needed to sharpen there skills that way. These tasks I really enjoyed as for one I love drawing, also I know that the more I draw, the better I will get - especially on the digital tablet!

The first two drawings we were allowed 10 minuets each and we had to pretty much copy the image on the slide that Simon was sharing. I feel I got the form and flow of the trees correct however if I was doing these drawing traditionally I would have depth, shading and a feel of a 3D form however because I was doing them digitally, I ended up with a flat looking image. This isn't a problem for me as I just wanted to get more used to using the tablet and being more comfortable with the software going forward. I am overall happy with how the first two images turned out for me. (Drawing 1-2)

The second task we had to complete is where I would say it is more of a challenge. We had two reference images, one of a shed and one of a small hut like building. The shed we had to draw only using two tones and no hard lines. I sketched the shed on a under layer then worked on the two tone drawing on top. I decided the shed is the main subject of the image therefore it needed to be the darker tone - black. Then the background and foreground white, leaving negative space like features in the drawing. I also used a trick too leave 'paper breaks' or 'skin breaks' in the image which you can see inside the shed to differentiate the depths making the image more readable. (Drawing 3)

The second image of the hut building we had to draw with three tones this time. This added the possibility of more depth to the drawing so instead of just a foreground and background like the first drawing we had the opportunity to add a mid ground using grey. Again using the same plan as the first drawing, I decided the main feature of the image was the building. So I used the darkest tone to bring it forward and make the viewers eye drawn to it. Then I used some mid tones and light tones to differentiate some features inside the building like the roof overhang and the sign on the side of it also adding to the beams as the light source made one side lighter. The building in the background I used the mid tone as it was further away from the foreground building. I also used mid tones for the foliage in the foreground and background then leaving the rest of the scene white - the lighter tone - to again differentiate the depth. (Drawing 4)

The last task was a study of a building and we had to focus on the shapes that made the building rather then focusing on the actual details that made it. This I tend to do anyway as I know it is a better way to plan the drawing beforehand to create a more accurate drawing. We had about 20-25 mins to do this drawing as accurately as possible so I focused on getting the main structure of the building down. Again a problem I had with this piece was depth as I still need to practice and learn the best ways to shade and add depth in the drawings. Also getting more used to the software as I progress is a good thing as I am learning the ways to work more efficiently using shortcuts to turn and rotate the page as well as zooming in which is a feature that is not able to happen with traditional drawing which I like as I feel I can add a lot more smaller details in images as I don't need to use a microscope! (Drawing 5)

These lessons I am excited to go forth with as I know every lesson I do I will get better and make more mistakes to then overcome them and turn them into lessons for myself to become a better artist. These lessons will ultimately assist my ability to animate as I will feel more comfortable knowing I can draw figures and environments better which also will lead to a better quality of work from me!

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design Sub Tasks

Character Design Sub Tasks We were tasked to give character to things that already existed. I was given the Guggenheim museum which is a very unique building already with a lot of character. I have given the prompt military so I thought of hard angles and uniformity, which is something this building did not have... When looking at the building for a while and thinking of the prompt I saw a battleship. With the long platform and the bridge-like feature, I figured that is what I will turn it into. I am happy with what I produced here letting myself be creative and lose which I am working very hard on. The main problem that Justin had with this is that it was unrealistic... It is more of a stylized piece rather than an actual thing people would work on and use, which is fine because it was not specified that realism was wanted. We were then tasked with creating an interior of a character given to us. Mine was an Aztec priest so I started researching what that entailed. They used to ...

BSW - CAA - Finches Concept Art - In progress

Finches Concept Art - In progress I have been continuing the finches piece after the research I carried out and I have finished another finch. I have done this one in a more cartoony style as I am exploring my choices for the animation. It has bold, consistent lines and boxed colours to make it pop and it has a big eye that makes it stand out. As of now, I am swaying towards the cartoon style more as I feel like a video for educational purpose, it will draw more people in...
