BSW - CAA - Life Drawing Lesson 1

Life Drawing - Students Models

On Monday the 26th of Oct we had our first life drawing class which turned out to be a lot different then I thought. To start with I came into the class very confident as I had done life drawing previously in my final foundation year, therefore I knew what to expect. I had drawn a lady before in that class and I though I had done really well with capturing the form and flow of the body as well as decent proportion - I will add the images of this at the end of this post!

The problem we had with this lesson however was that the male model was ill with food poisoning and I don't want to know how that would have turned out if he decided to attend the class! The alternative option that we had to take was for the students to model for the subject to draw. I was the first to volunteer and we had to sit for 10 minuets each. Personally it is a weird feeling to have 15+ other people staring at you! After sitting I saw the other students work and was impressed with a lot of them. Another students sat and I think I did quite well with the upper body portion however looking after I noticed I had shortened the legs quite a bit, maybe because I was lacking depth I am unsure - The first image.

The second students sat and I think I had more of a hard time with him. Again I am unsure why, I feel like I have a good plan of marking out loosely but it seems to get away from me coming together. The biggest problem I had returning to life drawing was scale. I feel as though if I had gone a lot bigger like the previous life drawing experience I could have got a more accurate representation of both students form.

Going too small was a big learning curve as I pretty much see these images as a fail however I know that failure only leads to success so the next lessons I have I know to go bigger and looser. These lessons with definitely help with my animation course as I will learn and practise the human for and figure also learning proportions and I hope that this will become another language to me!

Another difference I have noticed is that the students were wearing clothes where as the life model was nude. This could have resulted in my failure to draw the students as I could not get the forms of the clothing write as I could with the natural form of the body. A similarity I have noticed with my work is that I did not draw the faces on the figures. I think my one weakness is faces with drawing in general. However I do not know why this is as at home I have free handed many commissions of peoples family members as portraits. I will just have to stick to practicing and see where it leads me!

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design Sub Tasks

Character Design Sub Tasks We were tasked to give character to things that already existed. I was given the Guggenheim museum which is a very unique building already with a lot of character. I have given the prompt military so I thought of hard angles and uniformity, which is something this building did not have... When looking at the building for a while and thinking of the prompt I saw a battleship. With the long platform and the bridge-like feature, I figured that is what I will turn it into. I am happy with what I produced here letting myself be creative and lose which I am working very hard on. The main problem that Justin had with this is that it was unrealistic... It is more of a stylized piece rather than an actual thing people would work on and use, which is fine because it was not specified that realism was wanted. We were then tasked with creating an interior of a character given to us. Mine was an Aztec priest so I started researching what that entailed. They used to ...

BSW - CAA - Finches Concept Art - In progress

Finches Concept Art - In progress I have been continuing the finches piece after the research I carried out and I have finished another finch. I have done this one in a more cartoony style as I am exploring my choices for the animation. It has bold, consistent lines and boxed colours to make it pop and it has a big eye that makes it stand out. As of now, I am swaying towards the cartoon style more as I feel like a video for educational purpose, it will draw more people in...
