 Nats Animator Studies

Lotte Reiniger

Reiniger was a German film director who died in 1981 and was named the 'pioneer' of silhouette animation. She liked the art of Chinese paper cutting of silhouette puppets and that was the thing that set her off to create the career she did. She used to build her own puppet theatre to put on shows for her family and friends.

She made the animated rats and created the intertitles for the Pied Piper of Hamlin. This got her into the Institute of Cultural Research which was an animation and short film studio. She later produced the 'first animated feature film' The Adventures of Prince Achmed, this was a popular success. Reiniger wrote instructions on how to construct her "trick-table" in her book, Shadow puppets, shadow theatres, and shadow films. This trick table was the thing that lead to method of cel animation.

Don Hertzfeldt

Hertzfeldt makes very simple looking animations that are all very comedic and clever. He has won many awards and has appeared on shows like The Simpsons. In his early life he drew many animations and taught himself how to animate using a VHS camera. He graduated from the University of California with a B.A. in Film Studies in 1998.

He work features his hand drawn stick figures in stories that mainly consist of dark humour and surrealism. He works with pen and paper with minimal digital aid and uses vintage 16mm or 35mm film cameras because he likes the effect that they give.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design Sub Tasks

Character Design Sub Tasks We were tasked to give character to things that already existed. I was given the Guggenheim museum which is a very unique building already with a lot of character. I have given the prompt military so I thought of hard angles and uniformity, which is something this building did not have... When looking at the building for a while and thinking of the prompt I saw a battleship. With the long platform and the bridge-like feature, I figured that is what I will turn it into. I am happy with what I produced here letting myself be creative and lose which I am working very hard on. The main problem that Justin had with this is that it was unrealistic... It is more of a stylized piece rather than an actual thing people would work on and use, which is fine because it was not specified that realism was wanted. We were then tasked with creating an interior of a character given to us. Mine was an Aztec priest so I started researching what that entailed. They used to ...

BSW - CAA - Finches Concept Art - In progress

Finches Concept Art - In progress I have been continuing the finches piece after the research I carried out and I have finished another finch. I have done this one in a more cartoony style as I am exploring my choices for the animation. It has bold, consistent lines and boxed colours to make it pop and it has a big eye that makes it stand out. As of now, I am swaying towards the cartoon style more as I feel like a video for educational purpose, it will draw more people in...
