BSW - CAA - Artist Studies for Nat

 Bill Plympton

Bill Plympton is an American animator, graphic designer, cartoonist, and filmmaker who was born in 1946, best known for his 1987 Award-nominated animated short Your Face. he studied graphic design at Portland State University later transferring to the school of visual arts in New York where he majored in Cartooning. He graduated from there in 1969.

His animation style mainly consists of hand drawn animation and has a weird and comedic theme. Nat in one of the lessons showed us a cool animation of his where it is a mans head morphing and changing shape in all different ways.

I think I relate to Bill in the fact that he went to Uni for art and came out with a career in animation - or cartooning in his time - and that is what I am striving to achieve!

Richard Williams

Richard Williams was born in 1933 in Toronto, Canada and unfortunately died last year in August. He was best known for his role in 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' as director of animation. The animation went on to receive many awards. In 2002 he wrote and published the 'Animators Survival Guide' which showed many animation methods and techniques. This is one of the greatest animation guides out there and it has been made into 16 different DVD's and an IOS app.

'Prologue' was the last animation produced by Richard before his death and is an amazing animation! I just watched it and it shows really good drawing frame by frame. It must have taken him so so long to make and I wish I could one day live up to the standards in that animated short! Each frame has a complex drawing showing great detail consistently and the simple colours and simple background make the subjects really pop. It shows 4 Greek men fighting and in the end they all die. Once the fight is over we see a little girl who has found the bodies and she runs to find comfort in a woman.

I will definitely take many things from Richard and his style and I hope it will make me a better artist and animator in the long run!

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design Sub Tasks

Character Design Sub Tasks We were tasked to give character to things that already existed. I was given the Guggenheim museum which is a very unique building already with a lot of character. I have given the prompt military so I thought of hard angles and uniformity, which is something this building did not have... When looking at the building for a while and thinking of the prompt I saw a battleship. With the long platform and the bridge-like feature, I figured that is what I will turn it into. I am happy with what I produced here letting myself be creative and lose which I am working very hard on. The main problem that Justin had with this is that it was unrealistic... It is more of a stylized piece rather than an actual thing people would work on and use, which is fine because it was not specified that realism was wanted. We were then tasked with creating an interior of a character given to us. Mine was an Aztec priest so I started researching what that entailed. They used to ...

BSW - CAA - Finches Concept Art - In progress

Finches Concept Art - In progress I have been continuing the finches piece after the research I carried out and I have finished another finch. I have done this one in a more cartoony style as I am exploring my choices for the animation. It has bold, consistent lines and boxed colours to make it pop and it has a big eye that makes it stand out. As of now, I am swaying towards the cartoon style more as I feel like a video for educational purpose, it will draw more people in...
