BSW - CAA - Fantastic Voyage Initial Idea

 Fantastic Voyage Initial Idea

I had a lot of time to think last night about the initial direction I want my educational video to go in. I want to do something different to other people. I think others will go for a more direct educational animation with straight facts and theories however I want to tell more of a story which will get the viewer involved in the characters and learn more and more as the animation goes on. I want it to be cinematic and immersive so that the viewer will not find it just another boring science video but a video they want to watch and follow!

So the idea I have is to do with Charles Darwin's study of evolution of finches in the Galapagos Islands. I find it really interesting that Charles took note of every little detail of the finches and how dedicated he was to his passion. I am going to do a post dedicated to the study and go in depth with research on the subject, but I want this post showing my idea for the animation.

The premise for my animation is to follow one main character, a finch, and follow its journey from island to island trying to find its correct food source and same species. This main character has a certain type of beak that only allows it to eat a certain type of food. I'm not sure yet how the animation will start however I know the storyline that will follow.

The Galapagos Islands consist of 4 different islands. The finch will find itself on the first island trying to find food however because of its wrong beak it cant eat the food it finds. This leads to the other finches on the island with the right beak to laugh and bully him off it. Then the same with the second, and also the third. As the journey of this finch continues in a downhill spiral I will add pathetic fallacy into the animation which will make the atmosphere so much nicer for the viewer and add variation to the scenery.

The final island that the finch ventures to is the one where he finds his food and species! He goes and after searching around he sees his food in the distance. This is when the sky's open up and become bright and things start to go the right way for the finch.

The one thing I need to think of is how I am going to make each venture to new islands different. Maybe the finch finds the food in different ways, maybe the other birds actually try to help but cant as he doesn't have the right beak. I am going to need to work this out and also how the Animation actually starts. I want to include Darwin and his ship, the Beagle, in at some point so maybe it starts with his ship sailing into the islands and there is a nice cinematic camera transition to the main finch we will follow.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design Sub Tasks

Character Design Sub Tasks We were tasked to give character to things that already existed. I was given the Guggenheim museum which is a very unique building already with a lot of character. I have given the prompt military so I thought of hard angles and uniformity, which is something this building did not have... When looking at the building for a while and thinking of the prompt I saw a battleship. With the long platform and the bridge-like feature, I figured that is what I will turn it into. I am happy with what I produced here letting myself be creative and lose which I am working very hard on. The main problem that Justin had with this is that it was unrealistic... It is more of a stylized piece rather than an actual thing people would work on and use, which is fine because it was not specified that realism was wanted. We were then tasked with creating an interior of a character given to us. Mine was an Aztec priest so I started researching what that entailed. They used to ...

BSW - CAA - Finches Concept Art - In progress

Finches Concept Art - In progress I have been continuing the finches piece after the research I carried out and I have finished another finch. I have done this one in a more cartoony style as I am exploring my choices for the animation. It has bold, consistent lines and boxed colours to make it pop and it has a big eye that makes it stand out. As of now, I am swaying towards the cartoon style more as I feel like a video for educational purpose, it will draw more people in...
