My Final Project Explained
As you may have seen, from what I have been researching I want to create a project about a space station. I will elaborate on this and explain what I will be doing over the next years.
Originally I wanted to just do an environmental design project as the main focus for my future career is going into modeling. I want to create an exterior for a space station and parts of the interior where a camera would fly through, showing off my model. Then I thought I could make so much more of the Space station if I was going to add a character design portion of the project. The space station's goal is to transport cryo pods on a mission to a new inhabitable planet for the population that it is carrying. I didn't want to go down the same route as a lot of space station-related subjects and go for a human race so I wanted to challenge myself and hopefully show off the skills I have learned over the last projects, creating my own race of people, my own culture. This means I have a lot of freedom when creating my models and character. Of course with a character, it means I will be building the environment around them, for example, if the character had three fingers, maybe there is a fingerprint scanner that requires a three-fingered design... On top of the modeling and the character design, I want to tie in the story.
My idea is that this character's cryo pod will fail and he will wake up early before everyone else the station is holding. They will traverse the ship, exploring it room by room. At some point, the character will walk through doors to a part of his home planet, his house. He will walk in and through, back through doors to the space station. They will take a few more steps until blacking out. It will then be revealed that the character has been in the cryo pod the whole time, and we have seen the dream he has been having.
The character will act as my camera, in a first-person view just like a GoPro on a head mount. I will do a whole character bible for the main character however I will only be modeling the lower body, legs, and arms since that is the only thing you are seeing in the final animation. As they turn their head to look at the details you will see the arms or when they look down you will see the legs.
The main reason why I want to have an alien race as my focus is because of the fact that the viewer will pay a lot more attention to the details of the models. If I had a human race and a human-built station, many have seen it before or similar therefore paying less attention to the details. But if it's something they have never seen before then you will look a lot closer at the things you do not recognize.
The whole thing including the models, the character, the station, all of it will be in a dark red color. Reds will create the whole ambiance of the animation making it unique and almost unsettling for the viewer almost horror-like... The animation will be covered by a red fog reinforcing the dream state plot.
I want to create an ambient, chilling soundscape for the animation. I want low tones to cover the whole thing and different pitches lowing and rising to create an unsettling feel, pairing with the unsettling graphics. When he enters his homeworld I want to introduce a more inspiring, fantastical track slowly gaining volume until the moment he passes out. The music will cut then restart when the twist is shown...
