BSW - CAA - My Audience

My Audience For my educational animation, I want to make sure I am engaging the correct audience. I want people that will be interested in the subject but also will appreciate the effort and work that has gone into making it, therefore it will keep them watching. I will be aiming this animation at GCSE students, years 10 and 11. I feel as though this will be the best audience for my animation as they will be needing this information to understand the subject so I want to make it interesting and more fun for them. I am doing this as I can relate to them. When I was in GCSE level education, Science was a dragging subject that I personally found boring. The presentations and films shown were basic and boring and all consisted of the same things.  I want to do something different to this and show a story instead of straight facts and information so I will be leaving words out of it. I will show the information in the animation through the story of Finn and the problems he overco...

BSW - CAA - Finn the Finch!

Finn the Finch! This is Finn the Finch. He will be the main character for the animation and we will follow him on the journey through the Galapagos Islands. I really like the presence he brings with the colours and bold outline. This is 2d and I will need to do my best to translate the style across using various textures and filters. It will be interesting to see the outcome. I feel as though the cartoony style and bright colours will draw in the viewer and make a connection as they follow the story. I want to get a lot of emotion from Finn so I have made his eyes big and cartoony so I can easily change the shape and it will be noticeable.

BSW - CAA - Finches Concept Art - Done

Finches Concept Art  - Done My concept art for the finches is complete. I wanted to test the different styles I could work with and I think I am going to go with the cartoony, block-colour style. I think this will be more aesthetically pleasing and easier to work with so I can get the best possible outcome for this project. I will be doing art for the island and art for the specific birds in my animation. This will help me complete the storyboard and animatic, knowing what my birds will look like. For the last finch, I went for a more painterly style using colours softly and the blur tool to stitch them together. I like the look of this style but for an animation, I feel it will be too confusing and time-consuming.

BSW - CAA - Finches Concept Art - In progress

Finches Concept Art - In progress I have been continuing the finches piece after the research I carried out and I have finished another finch. I have done this one in a more cartoony style as I am exploring my choices for the animation. It has bold, consistent lines and boxed colours to make it pop and it has a big eye that makes it stand out. As of now, I am swaying towards the cartoon style more as I feel like a video for educational purpose, it will draw more people in...

BSW - CAA - Finch Actions Research

Finch Actions Research I have spent a lot of time today researching the movement of the Galapagos finches. I looked at how they move; chirp, eat, fly and stand in detail watching videos and looking at images. I also found out a lot about the evolution of the species, I have a lot of pictures for reference.  The finches all move along the terrain by hopping like many birds. They use flight mostly to traverse the islands they are based on. I have mainly done this research to see the movements and actions so when it comes to animating them I will have a really good idea. It all seems very obvious when writing this down... I looked into how each variation of beak eats too, looking at the different foods and different beak movements and how agile they are to get the food. I have got many images of the different birds close up to their beaks and from distance. This will help my concept art and modelling process when it comes to it.

BSW - CAA - Changes To Plot

Changes To Plot I have thought of a good start to the story that I will be doing for the educational animation for the fantastic voyage project. The animation will start with a harsh storm brewing over the archipelago. You see the finch then being swept away by the harsh winds produced by the storm. There will be shots in this 'scene' showing the bird through the air being tossed left and right, struggling to try to fly. The finch will land on a different island and the storm calms down. the sky is still grey and dark etc. This is to keep the addition of pathetic fallacy that I wanted to add. Through the story, The sky will get darker and the rain more prominent and will only open back up sunny when the finch finds its food and species. I am next going to do research on the movement of these finches. This is because I need to know how they act in different situations; how they hop, blink, chirp, and how they fly...

BSW - CAA - Finches Concept Art - In progress

Finches Concept Art - In progress This is the first finch on this piece I am working on. I want to create a couple more realistic finches alongside a couple of more cartoony finches with bigger eyes and brighter, bold colors. I enjoyed this process of the first bird creating a more realistic drawing. I don't usually draw digitally however at my time on this degree I see I am improving all the time! I used small highlights and dark to light contrast to create depth. I am going to add the other birds with the other variations of the beak.

BSW - CAA - Maya Rigging Tutorial - Part 2

Maya Rigging Tutorial - Part 2 This morning we continued with the rigging tutorial and completed the spine; head, facial features also started on the arms. I am enjoying rigging and don't see why people may find it boring... I think it is really interesting to do as it is a further sense of creation.

BSW - CAA - HMS Beagle Concept Art

HMS Beagle Concept Art Here is a finished concept art for the HMS Beagle. I wanted to furthermore get away from spending a load of time on things that only make up a insignificant part of the project. I like these images as they show the front and back of the ship to get a good detailed view of it. I like the style of these drawings and will do more like it.

BSW - CAA - HMS Beagle Research and Reference

HMS Beagle Research and Reference These images I will use for modelling and drawing up concept art for the HMS Beagle. I want to include the ship in my animation so I have gained all of these images to help me.

BSW - CAA - The HMS Beagle

The HMS Beagle   The Beagle was a Cherokee class, 10 gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy. The Cherokee class was a class of brig-sloops of the Royal Navy that had 10 guns. Brig-sloops were sloops-of-war with two masts rather than the three masts of ship sloops. Brigs were popular as they were both fast and maneuverable and were used as both naval warships and merchant vessels.  It was ordered in 1817 along with another 100 in its class. It cost them £7,803 which now would cost around £700,000! It took the ship makers from the Woolwich Dockyard 1 year to build and was laid down in 1818. The Beagle was then commissioned in 1820.  Captain Pringle Stokes was appointed captain of the Beagle on September 7th 1825 and the ship was allocated to the surveying section of the hydrographic office.  On 27 September 1825  The Beagle  docked at Woolwich to be repaired and fitted for its new duties. Its guns were reduced from ten to six and a  ...

BSW - CAA - Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin Charles Robert Darwin was born on the 12 of February in 1809. He was born in The Mount, a Georgian house in Shrewsbury, England. He was the 5th of 6 children. He was a naturalist, geologist and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution.  He wrote and published books in his time and here are some notable ones; 'The Voyage of the Beagle' 1839, 'On the Origin of Species' 1859 and 'The Decent of Man' 1871. The Origin of Man is the book most recognised as the one with the most compelling evidence. By the 1870's Darwin's theory of evolution and natural selection was widely accepted. However, many people preferred other theories which gave little evidence and played a minor role to natural selection. It was not until from the 1930's to the 1950's that people came to a consensus in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. Darwin had early interest in nature and this led to him leaving hi...
