BSW - CAAyr2 - Concepts PT7 - Final Space Station Variations

Final Space Station Variations I have been getting on with working on the final rendition of my space station. After creating the other concepts I really like 2 of them. So I have decided to merge parts of them both which has produced a pretty good outcome. I played with the size of the ship as seen below as a result of the initial outcome looking too stubby where I wanted the outcome to look long and grand in scale. In this case, I think I will be going with the second look.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Final Renditions P1 - Character Development

Character Development After a 1-1 with Simon, he has shed light on the fact that I still have way to go to get to the final product of a character. I was happy with my concepts and turnarounds of my character however I realized that the drawings are not detailed enough at all. So going back and revisiting the character was a must. Below you will see the body and head comparisons along with focused drawings of hands and feet. As you can see I have greatly introduced more depth to the character using shade and texture of the skin. I have researched muscle structure in legs and arms, using that, I have created the lean-looking body you see below.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Concepts P6 - Space Station Concepts

Space Station Concepts I have been creating concepts for my space station using the researched ships I have seen. I wanted to keep to the biomechanical theme alongside keeping it within the key features of the race like their collar bones etc.  When designing these ship concepts I needed to keep in mind that I will be modeling the one that I chose to refine therefore needing to keep the shape and structure of the ships fairly simplified.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Toolkit 2 - JPJ UV Mapping

JPJ UV Mapping I have taken time to UV map JPJ. I was dreading this part of the tutorial but looking forward to it at the same time. This is because I think that my greatest weakness of the course so far is UVing. However, watching this tutorial then following along, I learned a lot about the subject. I realized how much I was overcomplicating the UV process so I am happy with how well I completed this.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Concepts PT5 - Body Turnaround

Body Turnaround I am pretty happy with how this turnaround has come out. You can see that I have tried to keep the proportions the best I can to keep the slim sinister look of the character. I can now create the clothing for the character then update the turnaround for it.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Concepts PT4 - Character Development

Character Development   I have been working on creating the base body for the character. I drew up a couple concepts in silhouette form to focus on the base shape.  I like the variety I created using these silhouettes and I used the same base concept for each. The second body catches my eye more when looking through these and I took it into further development. I think the shape of the body with the horn-like bone structures along with the ribs that extrude out go along with the sinister look of the head and the eyes. I think the skinnier, more tapered body also fits with this chilling theme. Next thing is to create the turnarounds and finally the clothes for the character.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Concepts PT3 - Character Development

Character Development I have been hard at work today creating the head of my character. I have done concepts based on my initial descriptions, experimented with different patterns, and have completed the turnaround for the head. I am very happy with the results and am confident that I can now progress onto the facial expression sheets and body without having to come back to it. Initial Concept Final Design Pattern Variations Turnaround

BSW - CAAyr2 - Concepts P2 - Character Eyes

Character Eyes I have created these designs to have a range to choose from. I researched many different species of spiders with their different eye arrangements to find the most fitting and interesting ones for my character. I really like the sinister look of the bottom left drawing. I think this will suit the overall red, chilling vibe that I am going for. If I was going for a more friendly look I think I would go for the top left because of its big round eyes, with roundness being associated with a safe friendly shape.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Race Ideas

Character Race Ideas I want to create a unique race of people for my story however I want to keep it pretty similar to the humanoid way of living. They will eat fruit and meat, sleep through the night, work during the day, etc... They will see, hear, taste all like humans too. I have an idea of what I want them to look like however, the ideas need to be stitched together. I want them to have multiple eyes just like a spider.  I want them to have multiple rows of teeth like sharks, but one sharp and one blunt row of grinding teeth.  Another major thing about the race will be that they do not have any hair, but instead, they all have a completely unique birth pattern covering their head in different ways. Also much like humans, the color of the pattern when born will be bright and colorful and as the race ages the color fades out becoming grey or white. I think this also is a great trait of the race as if I were to take this animation further into a full-on film, then the...

BSW - CAAyr2 - My Final Project Explained

My Final Project Explained As you may have seen, from what I have been researching I want to create a project about a space station. I will elaborate on this and explain what I will be doing over the next years.  Originally I wanted to just do an environmental design project as the main focus for my future career is going into modeling. I want to create an exterior for a space station and parts of the interior where a camera would fly through, showing off my model.  Then I thought I could make so much more of the Space station if I was going to add a character design portion of the project. The space station's goal is to transport cryo pods on a mission to a new inhabitable planet for the population that it is carrying. I didn't want to go down the same route as a lot of space station-related subjects and go for a human race so I wanted to challenge myself and hopefully show off the skills I have learned over the last projects, creating my own race of people, my own cul...

BSW - CAAyr2 - Dissertation Proposal - Initial Ideas

Dissertation Proposal - Initial Ideas For the proposal, I need to find something that I want to write about other than what I have to write about. The last essay for me was a struggle as I chose such a broad subject, time. Time has been a huge debate from the start of it! I need to find a subject that I will be able to write about enough to fill a dissertation. Here is a list of subjects that have controversies surrounding them that I am interested in: Cars, Gaming, Technology, Tattoo Acceptability, Marijuana Legality... The ones that interest me the most are the tattoo debate and the marijuana legality. They are both debates that have a lot of controversies and opposing views that I can research and also get first-hand research on through interviews with people. For example, my grandad hates tattoos and he told me if he catches me smoking marijuana he will personally take me to the police station!! I would ask him about his past experiences and why he doesn't like the subject an...

BSW - CAAyr2 - Film Review - Passengers

Passengers I wanted to watch and research into the film passengers as I feel as though the basic premise of the film is close to the plot that I want in mine. In the film, the main character Jim Preston played by Chris Pratt is awoken from his cryo pod as a result of a malfunction due to a huge meteor striking the station. The problem is that he is awoken early, with 90 years still to go on the station's journey to 'Homestead 11'. The reason that they are going there is because of Earth's overpopulation and to start a new fresh life.  He then spends a year by himself on the station alone, with only the company of a single robot bartender, before finding a girl, Aroura, in another cryo pod that catches his eye. He then reads up on her biography and ultimately falls in love, battling the thought of waking her up. The moral problem here is that he will basically doom her as they will never reach the planet to where they are headed.  He wakes her up but does not tell her ...

BSW - CAAyr2 - Concepts P1 - BioMech Stations

Biomech Stations After researching the space stations, existing and concepts, I wanted to then look at some biomechanics. In the final production, I want the space station to be made from biomechanics therefore I need to look at images and things that have already been created to use for inspiration. Before researching, I had a good idea of what the subject of biomechanics was, as a result of it being tied into tattoos so much. It is a very odd style and can have so many different variations, colors, shapes, etc. I then wanted to experiment with some concept art and merge some biomechanics with the stations I researched before. I created these with a simple mask and opacity change...

BSW - CAAyr2 - Initial Research P1 - SpaceStations

SpaceStations I have taken time to research existing space stations and concepts that people have created on a more fantastical level with huge scale etc. There are only two existing space stations in orbit right now, The ISS - international space station. And the TSS -  Tiangong space station. The TSS was launched into orbit on the 29th of April 2021 and the ISS has been in orbit for over 10 years being launched on the 20th of November 1998. ISS: The ISS is just short of the length of an American football field. Notice how unorganized and messy the interior looks... TSS: The TSS is only 20 meters long as a result of it being under construction. It is a lot more organized and modules will connect to build up the station. I also saw many interesting concept space stations that can be used as inspiration for my design.

To Do List:

To-Do List: I will be uploading and updating this after every change. ----------------------------------------------- Research :  Existing space stations made up ones too - Design, colour, scale, material. Alien races for inspiration. Look at different spacescapes from film, games, real images. ----------------------------------------------- Concepts : Alien races from research Space Stations from research - focus more on smaller parts looking at materials, colour, scale Sound will be a big thing so create a few soundscapes based on the research. Give the sounds an image or concept to help visualise. ----------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------- Jot the basic plot, storyline for the final thing - Create an end goal

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design Reflective Statement

Character Design Reflective Statement Completing the character bible has made me feel accomplished as a result of not feeling the most confident about the whole thing from the start. I am very happy overall with how my presentation turned out. I think that I have been pretty thorough with my drawings, research, and high motivation for the project. I definitely have overcome obstacles like figuring out certain perspective shots however when figured out, I felt good about what I had created. I think I could have created a little more backstory to the bible however for the short scene I have produced, it makes sense to the viewer and will hopefully make them feel like they want to see the story in action... Overall I am happy with my time management throughout this project and will take the skills learned through character design and traditional drawing skills onto the next projects to come.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design - Character Facial expressions

Character Facial expressions I have created these different facial expressions for each character. I wanted to have the most for the main character than for the owl because it is a teddy, he would have less.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design - Character Turnarounds

Character Turnarounds These are the turnarounds for my characters. You can see that the character is the same in all views so I am happy with the outcome.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design - Sidekick Variations

Sidekick Variations This is the sidekick character for the story. Using the research of the owl toys and teddys, I created this character. Sticking to the fireman theme I added the axe under the wing and the color of the hat in theme with the main character. I added a hard outline to keep in the theme of cartoon style like I did with the main character. I like the limited-toned-down color pallet as it contrasts with the main character. The owl is a teddy so is soft so it needs to contrast with the plastic toy.

BSW - CAAyr2 - Character Design - Main Character Costume Variations

Main Character Costume Variations After a small break for Christmas, I have been working on my character bible a lot, thinking about the next moves to progress towards the finished product. Taking the revised designs for the main character I have created the final design for him. I wanted to produce different variations of the costume to give me the most choice.  I went with the red costume as I think it pops the most and it draws the eye more than the others. I made the addition of the water tank and the hose for the story as he will be using the items to overcome different obstacles throughout. After creating this character I noticed a problem where the joints and hinges do not really make sense. So I made a change where I put a more ball-like look to the ball joints. As you see here the joints now look more reasonable and believable.
